from “The Deeps” in The Valley of Vision:

Lord Jesus,

Give me a deeper repentance, a horror of sin, a dread of its approach; Help me to flee it and jealously to resolve that my heart shall be thine alone.

Give me a deeper trust, that I may lose myself to find myself in thee, the ground of my rest, the spring of my being.

Gracious Father,

May that be the refrain of my heart today. May I trust you enough that I would long to lose myself in order to find myself in you.

Give me so great and sufficient a view of you that I can delight to trust in you. Give me so great and sufficient a view of your mercy that I feel no need to justify myself. Give me so great and sufficient a view of your grace that I boldly and joyfully enter your presence through prayer, not by my own merit, but by Christ’s. Give me so great and sufficient a view of your sovereignty that I rest in your ongoing work in my life, regardless of how circumstances play out before me. Give me so great and sufficient a view of your power that I boldly share good news with those who are far from you and those who are near. Give me so great and sufficient a view of your wisdom that I trust you through all of the peaks and valleys of your plans for me. Give me so great and sufficient a view of your Word that I delight to walk according to your ways, and that I joyfully repent of my ways.

May I know you more – and trust you more – so that I may lose myself. My will. My desires. My hopes. My ambitions. My pride. May I lose these things to find myself in you.

Amen.
