Father: I thank you and praise you for how profoundly you have changed my relationship with you, with your ways, and with your Word through the gospel.

Apart from the gospel, any approach to you was an approach to a severe, wrathful judge who had an airtight case against me. But now, in the gospel, I approach you as a beloved, adopted son, as a member of your family with the full rights and privileges of your other children – even an inheritance from you that will never perish, spoil, or fade!

Apart from the gospel, I could only interpret any severity, hardship, disappointment, or affliction in my life as your righteous judgment against me. But now I know that you bring hard seasons to cultivate in me joy in you that transcends season. Because of the gospel, and because of the sure certainty of your love for me in Christ, I can know that every hardship that comes my way is a needful thing, necessary for my sanctification. And I need not live life so as to earn your favor or reward, for I have already received every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.

Apart from the gospel, your Word represented rules to follow and the necessary rituals and obligations to keep you off my back. Now I know that your Word represents the path to joy, the way to fullness and richness in life. If ever I think that your Word is a means of restricting my happiness or joy, that is only because I have lost sight of the gospel. The gospel proves to me the fullness of your commitment to my joy, which frees me to see your Word, even your commands, as a kindness and grace that will only lead me to fuller experiences of that joy.

If ever I think that your Word is a means of restricting my happiness or joy, that is only because I have lost sight of the gospel.

Your gospel changes everything, Father. I praise you for this today.
